​​Inner West Council - Awning Safety Program

​Inner West Council - Awning Safety Program

Inner West Council is undertaking an awning safety audit of all awnings and other structures that overhang Council's footpaths. This is in response to deaths in Bathurst and Balgowlah due to the collapse of unsafe awnings.

Council has sent letters to the owners of buildings with overhanging awnings and balconies notifying them of its requirements.

Under the Awning Safety Program, building owners will be required to:

1. Engage a structural engineer to certify that their building is safe, or
2. If it is unsafe, the engineer has to identify the work needed to make it safe and provide a report with a schedule of the work required. 
3. A copy of this report must be provided to Council within 2 months of the date of Council's letter and before any repairs are commenced.
4. Council will require the engineer to certify the repair work when it has been completed satisfactorily.

​Fines of $3,000 for individuals and $6,000 for companies may apply to those who do not comply with Council's requirements.
